The Hyped Up Books that I’ve Never Read

Hyped books never read

These are the hyped up books that I’ve never read…

Hyped books never read

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series) by Rick Riordan

Started it, didn’t like it. Can’t see what everyone is making such a fuss about!

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

Watched the trailer which put me off. Perhaps I’ve just read too many of the same.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Started it, didn’t like it. Wanted another Twilight and it’s not.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Loved the idea of this story more than its execution…  didn’t get further than the first few chapters.

Gone by Michael Grant

Started it, hated it.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

A friend forced upon lent me her copy of the ‘best book ever’. Nope, not so much. Too contrived.

Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking Series) by Patrick Ness

Didn’t get through the first chapter. Talking to your dog sounds cool, but it’s really not.

Gone Girl by Gillian Fylnn

I didn’t get a chance to read Gone Girl before the movie, which wasn’t that great.

Wizard of Oz and Little House on the Prairie Series

Growing up in Zimbabwe, on a diet of Enid Blyton, I wasn’t really exposed to American Fiction. I’ve thought of giving them a chance one day…

What hyped up books have you never read?
Are there any on my list that I should try again?

  1. Shame that you didn’t like The Lightning Thief. There’s a lot of fuss because it’s hilarious and so bizarre but oh well. Vampire Academy is definitely not like Twilight, I personally thought Rose was more badass than Bella. And haha talking to your dog really is better in idea than in actuality.

  2. Gone is one of my favorite books! I love the entire Gone series. I also loved the whole Knife of Never Letting Go trilogy. However, I’ve never read Percy Jackson either!
    Krystianna @ Downright Dystopian

  3. I’ve read three of these, two I really enjoyed and the third was meh. I love Riordan’s books, I think they are a lot of fun but I’m bit mythology nerd. The 5th Wave was pretty good too. I haven’t read a lot of alien fiction like this one so it was rather new to me. It can be a bit long winded though.
The Wizard of Oz was only okay. It’s definitely a classic but it sort of bored me.

  4. Vampire Academy is a series that I think I would enjoy, but I just haven’t gotten around to it. I don’t have a problem with it not being like Twilight (not that I have anything against Twilight), so I wonder if I might get on better with it.

  5. Would you believe me if I tell you that I never read any of those? HAHAH I’ve read the series of the lighting thief but I skipped the first book, I suck so bad hahaha Can’t believe I just did that to Rick Riordan. I also didn’t want to read VA since twilight kinda ruined it for me…well, the movie anyways. HAHA

  6. Though I enjoyed the 1st Percy Jackson book, I didn’t like it when I just started it, probably because I was searching for another Harry Potter at the time.

  7. I hope you get to Little House on the Prairie on day. That series is sweet and fun. I would recommend giving Percy Jackson another chance. They aren’t difficult reads, but I think what he does with Greek myths is very clever.

  8. Had a similar reaction to Miss Peregrine …. the concept seemed so cool but I never really connected with the story as much as I wanted to.

  9. Seeing Percy Jackson on your list hurts my heart a little, I have so much love for that series… However, I do think that The 5th Wave in NO WAY whatsoever lived up to the hype, I read it with my book club last year and we were all like WTF?? That’s just a big no.

  10. I also read The Lightning Thief but didn’t see why people are raving about it! I only read it because I was going to watch the movie with a friend. I also read Knife of Never Letting Go because so many friends were raving about it but I wasn’t impressed. I never felt the need to read the sequels even though I already have copies of them.

  11. I actually really enjoyed The Lightning Thief, but I can see why someone could not like it! I still hope you’d give it a second chance, though xD As for VA, it interest me at first, but now not really, especially after I watch the movie, which is really bad. Anyway, great list! 🙂

  12. Stop everythinG! Turn around, and go give The Knife of Never Letting Go another chance. I did the same thing- read the first few chapters and was like “NOPE BYE”. And a friend BEGGED me to keep reading, so I did. Just to tell her “I told you this was rubbish!” but…. IT ISN’T. It is fantastic and wonderful and AMAZING and one of my all-time favorite series.

So the others. I have read Gone, but haven’t been able to get to the others. They’re just so… long. They could have been literally HUNDREDS of pages shorter and been the same. I don’t know, I will read them one day, maybe. The 5th Wave… meh. I mean, it wasn’t bad, and I bought The Infinite Sea, but again, longer than it needed to be (I see a trend!)

  13. I agree that The Hundred Year-Old Man… was over hyped. It was ok, but not as great as I thought it would be.

I hope that one day you get the chance to read the Little House on the Prairie books.

  14. I read the first Vampire Academy book and couldn’t get past it to book 2. People said it would get better as the series went on, but I felt very ‘eh’ towards it and don’t really have a desire to continue with the series :/

  15. I really liked all the ones on the first row! I started Knife of Letting Go, but didn’t get much further than you. I wasn’t a big fan of the writing style or the story.

  16. Gone Girl is SO good!! I really want to read Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children as well. I have a copy, just haven’t had a chance to read it yet! 🙂 Great list!

  17. Yeah if you’ve already seen the Gone Girl movie, the surprise is already ruined. But I will say when I watched the movie I was thinking that people who hadn’t read the book were missing out on SO much. That movie was so slooooow in parts but then went really fast (or completely left out) really important things. The Vampire Academy should have been on my list. I just can’t get past those horrible covers!

  18. What you said about Knife of Never Letting Go – so true and so funny!! That made me laugh. I couldn’t get into that book either, nor the Gone series. Randomly, I too grew up in Zimbabwe and was obsessed with Enid Blyton – I swear I convinced myself I was actually in one of those books, asking my mum if we could have ‘lashings of ginger beer’ and ‘hot cocoa’.

  19. Fifth Wave I own but never picked up. The Peregrine book I quite fancied but never got round to buying and the feeling just kind of wore off.
I did read the Vampire Academy – confession – I had a book crush on Dimitri – there it is, I just plain old admit it!
Gone, I liked in a sort of superhero meets xmen almost like a comic book type of way. It’s quite young even for YA though.
    Lynn 😀

  20. I just recently read the first Percy Jackson book after promising my husband that I would. I think most of the hype comes from people who read it in middle school and grew up with it. I’m told the writing gets more complex as the books go on. I got through the first one, but would have definitely liked it better when I was younger.

  21. The Little House books were some of the first I ever read, so I have a soft spot for them. I keep thinking of picking them up again.;)
Kbife of Never Letting Go and Gone Girl just haven’t appealed to me.
    Thanks for stopping by!

  22. 5th Wave is another I’ve never read. Not sure what I’ll think of the movie, but if they look good, I might “have” to at least try the book. Not a fan of vampire stuff, so that’s a series I’ve never tried either.

Thanks for visiting Dreaming Under the Same Moon. Appreciate it. 🙂

  23. I think you should still give The 5th Wave a try, even if you didn’t enjoy the trailer. I’m not a fan of movie trailers in general.

  24. I adore the Percy Jackson books. Gone Girl isn’t a book for everyone. I haven’t watched the movie. I haven’t read Vampire Academy either, but everyone says that the books are better than the movie and I have a few of the books so maybe someday.

  25. I read The Lighting Thief to see if it was age appropriate for my then-8-year-old son. It’s a slow start, but the books in the series get better as you go. I liked the first two, and then by the third book I was loving it.

  26. Oh I vouch for the Heroes of Olympus series too, the characters are a little older, have a bit more depth, and the story is a bit more than the Percy Jackson show (and I adored the first Percy Jackson series). I also LOVED The Caster Chronicles, also The Mortal Instruments series was brilliant.
I love YA fantasy, I really do.

  27. I think you give up on books too soon.
Patrick Ness’ Chaos Walking series is quite good. Yes, the dog talks but the book gets so EXCITING and one never quite knows who is right and who is wrong.
I also liked the 5th Wave, found it very exciting, too.

  28. I really didn’t think much of Gone either, I finished Gone but couldn’t pick up book 2 as it was just tortuous finishing Gone! I think the premise of this series could have been made brilliant!

I really enjoyed The 5th Wave but I wish I had just read it once the entire series was complete so I can just read it one after the other.

    My #TTT

    Have a great week everyone!

  29. I read Gone Girl and just didn’t like it at all. Blech to the characters – not likeable at all. My children are reading and loving The Fifth Wave. not sure I will attempt it though. Interesting re Knife of Never Letting Go. Not sure if I am going ot be able to get into this book. A Monster Calls was incredible.

  30. Gone Girl was worth the hype only for the brilliance in inflicting that amount of hate/pain/agony of a read on so many people. I had rage issues after that book. It’s brilliant, but it is soul-crushing. Percy Jackson was good and really helped my daughter keep reading and relate to a character. She is rereading this series again. I think it’s good too. I do feel you on the Gone series, but have read both the Wizard of Oz books and The Little House on the Prairie. There’s something to them, if you read them as a child that sticks with you and sort of is formative in how you see the world and see how much it has changed. I don’t think many book series are complete enough in showing such a clear snapshot of the past.

My TTT has no overlap with yours, suprisingly!

  31. OOH, you’ll like heroes of Olympus better – more of the YA theme and just as awesome, if more <3 When it comes to hyped books, weeeeell, here’s for the most obvious one: TWILIGHT. SERIOUSLY. I don’t think I’m up for sparkly vampires yet. I don’t think I’ll EVER be ready, but I digress.

  32. I read Gone Girl after the huge hype… and I loved it, every single page of it… right up until the final paragraph when I was left thinking WTAF?? And then I hated the book! 🙂

  33. Omg, I felt the same way about the 100-Year-Old Man. I actually didn’t finish it. But I kind of think I’ll go back and finish it one day? I HOPE. XD I hate unfinished books but honestly I was so bored.
AGH. I hear ya with Percy Jackson and The Knife of Never Letting Go. I went on to adore BOTH those books and authors, but it took me a little to get warmed up. 😉 I much prefer Patrick Ness’ newest book and Rick Riordan’s second series. XD
    Here’s my TTT!

  34. ‘Talking to your dog sounds cool, but it’s really not.’ Hahaha, I must admit I tried reading The Knife of Never Letting Go and couldn’t get into it for that reason, but I’d like to give it another try because I’ve heard the trilogy as a whole is fantastic. 🙂 Somehow I completely managed to forget to include The Lightning Thief on my list, yet another book I keep meaning to read!

I very recently bought a copy of The 5th Wave and I’m looking forward to read it, mainly because, and this will sound off, but it’s the only post-apocalyptic book I’ve come across with a female lead who acknowledges that she needs tampons. Every other post-apocalyptic book I’ve read seems to just want to skip over periods as though they’ll have simply gone away!
