Series – Why I Delay Reading Them

series

Series

Confession… I often forget what a book was about – even if it’s one I really liked. #bookwormproblems I’m sure you’ll agree that my excuses explanations are valid:

  • I read a lot.
  • Half my attention is on what to read next.
  • I sometimes read more than one book at a time.
  • I alternate during the day between reading one book and listening to another on Audible.
  • Authors and Publishers deliberately confuse readers by changing the covers.

And one of the biggest #bookwormproblem of all is that authors don’t write fast enough. (Yes, I know the other big #bookwormproblem is they write too fast and how am I going to ever get through my TBR) but when it comes to series I have often forgotten the essence of the story by the time the sequel comes out…

My solution: avoid series until all books have been published so I can binge read. This brings its own problems… Avoiding spoilers, missing out on the hype excitement and struggling to find anyone interested enough to talk about book 1 after they’ve read the whole series.

The following series are ones I intend to read. One day. Maybe. Once all books are published.

My most anticipated series

Which ones can you recommend? Do you read the first book in a series as soon as it’s published or do you delay like I do?

Lux by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Book 1: Obsidian

SeriesStarting over sucks. When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

  1. Becky@ A Fool's Ingenuity

I totally agree. I love a good book series as much as the next girl but I am terrible for finishing series as I forget about the next books release, or I forget what happened in the last book so put off reading until I have a chance to reread (which is never) and so I never finish. There are some good series on here, though. You do know some of these are duologies, though. You could totally finish them now. The Wrath and the Dawn was brilliant, and I probably would have enjoyed the second book in the Passenger series more if I had read the two books closer together but the books were good even with my book amnesia. I hope you manage to read them one day (and before other series grab your attention).

  2. Jo

A lot of these are on my TBR. The ones I have read are The Crown’s Game and This Savage Song, both of which were good but not favourites.

    My TTT: https://jjbookblog.wordpress.com/2017/06/20/top-ten-tuesday-112/

  3. Sam

I did finish some of the duologies on your list (TWATD, Passenger). I really adored Ahdieh’s writing. So beautiful. I was a fan of Poison’s Kiss and hope to read the second book, but I am on the shame train with most of your other picks. I have the first book, but still haven’t read them.

  4. AbyssalLibrarian

Great list! Many of those are books that I want to read at some point to. I have This Savage Song down for later this year. I can definitely relate to your reasons for delaying series though. I either get bored reading them all in a row, or wait and forget what happened in the previous one.

  5. Mallory @ The Local Muse

The Lux series is a lot of fun, but I never read the last book because the drama got to be a little too much for me. And the romance had totally taken over any of the other plots. I’m really interested in The Girl from Everywhere. Also enjoyed the Wrath and the Dawn, but haven’t read book two yet. Enjoy!
Thanks for stopping by The Local Muse

  6. Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense

I have been putting Poison’s Kiss on hold for so long. I just haven’t seen too many people review it, so my own enthusiasm has dwindled a bit. The Wrath and the Dawn however is a stunning duology that I highly recommend you pick up. Love that one so much.

  7. Kimberly Sabatini

I can’t wait when I KNOW I want to read a series, but love it when I don’t know ahead of time and find one I can go straight through with. :o)

  8. Mareli Thalwitzer

I haven’t done a Top Ten Tuesday in quite some time, but this was a fun theme.

Lovely post! I haven’t read any of these, but Passenger and The Girl from Everywhere is on my TBR list as well. The Crown’s Game is still debatable.

  9. Aubrey Aster

The Wrath and the Dawn is such a great series! I definitely recommend it. I really want to read This Savage Song, The Crown’s Game, and The Girl from Everywhere as well. Passenger is also on my TTT if you’re interested: https://www.adaster.com/top-ten-tuesday-series-ive-been-meaning-to-start-but-havent-yet/ I pretty hardcore relate to the binge reading thing. It is just better in every way as long as spoilers can be avoided. When I binge read, I can go from one book to the next pretty easily and it’s fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Nicole @ Nicole's Novel Reads

Wintersong is such a good book. I hope you enjoy it!

  11. Charlotte Burt

With series, as with other things, the waiting is half the fun. But agreed sometimes it can get irritating. I don’t think it would stop me from reading a series though.
My Top Ten Tuesday @ Engrossed in a good book

  12. Poinsettia

I tend to delay reading series as well. Like you, I prefer to wait until the whole series is out, or at least several books so that I can enjoy them one right after the other. This means I’m not exactly up to date on these series, but I’ve found I enjoy them more by reading them that way. I’ve not read any of these, but several of them sound really good! Here is my https://www.longandshortreviews.com/miscellaneous-musings/top-ten-series-ive-been-meaning-to-start/

  13. Sara @ Forever 17 Books

I forget too! It’s so hard to remember details. Some series are good with adding in reminders of key info from previous books but not all do. I have taken to looking for recap posts to help out because I’m really not a fan of rereading if I don’t have to. I do enjoy binge reading and don’t do it enough! I haven’t read any of the series you mentioned yet, excerpt The Wrath and the Dawn, and I did binge read those two together earlier this year. 🙂

  14. Tara

Changing covers mid series IS THE WORST! I read only exclusively on the kindle and it still enrages me. Are they deliberately trying to confuse you. And publishers that don’t tell number the series or give you the reading order somewhere obvious? Also terrible. It is a wonder that we start any series at all!

  15. Poem Fanatic @ Poems and Poets

Wintersong has such a beautiful cover! I also don’t like waiting for a while for the next installment in a series to come out. I read most of the popular trilogies and series before I was a blogger and so I always discovered them after all or most of the books had been published!!

  16. Cass (Words on Paper)

A few of these are also on my TBR! Great picks. And I totally agree with your excu – explanations! There just isn’t enough time, but also if I’m in the middle of a series and waiting for the next book I’ll forget about the book and just not get back to it until like a forever later!

    Cass @ Words on Paper

  17. Deb Nance at Readerbuzz

Hmmm…The Girl from Everywhere sounds fascinating. Great. Now I have yet another series to add to my want-t0-read list!

    https://readerbuzz.blogspot.com/2017/06/top-ten-series-ive-been-meaning-to.html

  18. Geybie's Book Blog

Confession: some of your reasons are mine as well. I get easily distracted. Anyway, I hope you enjoy each of these series when you get to read them. The Lux series is on my list too. I need to check out the rest. Awesome list. ???

  19. Annemieke

Monsters of Verity and The Wrath and the Dawn are finished so those you can move up to the top. 😉 I recently got The Girl From Everywhere and I am very curious about that one.

  20. Kaeley Scruggs

I usually read the first in a series if it’s an author I LOVE (Like V.E. Schwab) or I’ve seen it rec’d EVERYWHERE (Wintersong). I’ve read most of these books (or tried most of them) and most of them I enjoyed. Favorites are definitely This Savage Song and The Girl From Everywhere. I was pleased with Passenger but wasn’t as impressed with its companion. I won’t be reading The Poison’s Kiss because of problematic representation.

  21. RIssi

This is a feeling I know ALL too well, Sue. I forget what happened in books too! There’s so many amazing books, and so little time.

“The Crown’s Game” is a series I’d like to try and I own, “The Girl from Everywhere” plus “Passenger” so at some point I *must* read both of them. Here’s hoping we both enjoy them if/when we get the chance to read them. 🙂

Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland (RissiWrites.com); I appreciate it. 🙂

  22. Chrissi Reads

I have heard some great things about some of the series on your list! 🙂 I hope you enjoy them when you get around to them.

  23. Destiny @ Howling Libraries

I totally feel you on forgetting about books in the middle of a series. If I read a book when it releases, and then have to wait a year or whatever on the next one, I frequently have to skim the previous one or reread some reviews to remind myself of everything that happened… I’m not proud, lol. The Chronicles of Alice made it onto my T10T, too! I have the first book and actually have read the first few chapters. It seemed AWESOME, but I forgot to pick it back up so I ended up just moving it back to my TBR for another time. Here’s my T10T: https://howlinglibraries.com/2017/06/20/t10t-062017/
